[edit]I have a question: what is the readability of Old High German to modern readers of Standard German, as compared with that of Old English to Modern English (virtually nil)?

- Yup, about the same. Middle High German can be read by most Germans with a little adjustment, more or less, or at least the easiest texts can, but Old High German is not comprehensible without study. --Doric Loon 08:59, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
A section on Low German literature would be very useful here. I've added a subsection on mysticism. Altenmaeren (talk) 14:26, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Split?
[edit]I'm not convinced that having a single article on OHG and MHG literature makes sense. Given the major differences in preservation, the lack of overlap in genres, and the fact that there's not really a continuous tradition covering the two periods, I would say that separate articles are called for. And it's not as if the current article is particularly satisfactory in its content, either.--Pfold (talk) 17:01, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- I would support that, but as you say, we'd probably need to write two articles from scratch to do it satisfactorily.--Ermenrich (talk) 19:45, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- I suggest as a first step we remove the OHG section to its own article and rename this article to "Middle High German literature". The two articles won't be any worse than the current article and they can then be rewritten as time allows. The German WP has a much more complex group of articles on the topic, but I don't think we need to go that far. --Pfold (talk) 08:00, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
OK, I've made the split - the two articles will each need a lot of work to reach an acceptable standard. I've made a start on Old High German literature.--Pfold (talk) 09:59, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
Shouldn't this page now rather be turned into a dab?--Hildeoc (talk) 18:04, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
