Desperately seeking help with extra edit buttons, hope you don't mind :-)

[edit]

Mark hello,

I've been trying to do this on my own for a few days now to no avail, so I thought I'd send out a message to you, in the hope you don't mind.

I'm new to the Wiki thing + I'm not a developer, so I'm struggling a little. I've finally got everything I want set up on my company Intranet, but I really need those buttons.

Is there anything that can walk me through what I need to do to get this to work on my wiki? I've read your page, but I'm not getting it. Specifically:

- Where does the extraeditbuttons.js file need to be placed? - Where does the live.css file need to be placed? - Do I have to download all the button icons? Where do I put them? - How do I get a file that's in the format User:Elad/file.ext ? Do I upload it, point to it somehow?

I hope you can help, I would really appreciate it. No one has answered my forum post so far either.

Best, Elad - eladb@omnicell.com

Wikia skin

[edit]

Hi, congratulations on your great contributions. I'm adding them to [1] right after I finish writing this comment. Since you seem a reliable resourceful guy, maybe you can give me some hints about something I've been wondering about for quite a while: How can I add the Wikia skin to my site? You know the blue one with the search bar at the top and right side. Where can I download it and find the instructions? If you don't know, do you know somebody who might?

Thanks beforehand. --20-dude (talk) 02:46, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Installing XEB on Mediawiki 1.20

[edit]

Hi,

I just can't get XEB to work on a vanilla Mediawiki,

I followed these steps:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MarkS/Extra_edit_buttons#Installing_XEB_on_your_own_Wiki

but nothing shows up.

But when I paste the js in MediaWiki:Common.js, all buttons show.

Am I doing something wrong, is monobook.js not loaded?

Can you help.

Problems with installing your toolbar

[edit]

Dear Mark,

I hope you don't mind, if I'm the 150.000st user who asks you the same questions. But I also hope you will help me anyways. Following your steps of installation, I tried to install the toolbar, but there are some questions I need to get answered (hope my english isn't too bad, but I'm native speaking german. Maybe that's why I got those probs with installing the bar.

1. You will need your own setup of the MediaWiki software. This is not something I can help
you with. However, I have used meta:Wiki on a stick and found it easy to setup. I have also
installed XEB on it.

I did and I have and it works so far. So this is one point I don't have to worry about.

2.You must enable users to run Javascript by setting $wgAllowUserJS to true in
LocalSettings.php

My original LocalSettings.php doesn't include a line $wgAllowUserJS. So can I put this new line anywhere in this file or do I have to take care of anything special?

3. For the simplest install create a user called MarkS (or see below at 6).

I did, if you need the password, just send me a message. :-)

4. Copy the XEB script from User:MarkS/extraeditbuttons.js to the same location on your wiki

Ok, now to the hard part.

a) Do I have to mark it with my mouse and then copy and paste it to an empty editor file?

b) If yes, do I have to save this file as extraeditbuttons.js in my wiki- root- folder or somewhere else?

c) or should I open my site with the extraeditbuttons.js and put the code in there? (my personal example: http://schwarze-lilie.com/wiki/index.php/extraeditbuttons.js)

5. Copy the XEB css from User:MarkS/XEB/live.css to the same location on your wiki

Same as the question before .

6. Get users to include the script by editing their monobook.js. (Note: The easiest way to do
this without creating a user MarkS is adding an accordant line in [MonoBook].php (the php of
your skin)!) You might be able to do this the same way that it works on Wikipedia (see the top
of this article). Alternatively use the following lines (changing the URL as necessary):
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
           + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

Sorry, but here I do not understand a single word. I opened my Monobook.php and was ready to accord a line, but WHAT line and WHERE?

7. Once the script is running you should move the images from MediaWiki to your own wiki.

Yeah, I will, and I hope IT will be running. ;-)

So thank you in advance for your answering and your patience.

Kind regards,

A little help with XEB

[edit]

Hi Mark, first of all thanks for help given to the community building those extra plugins.
I've been trying to install the XBE for a while but i didn't had any success. No XBE is displayed when i try to create or edit an article. I followed all the steps from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MarkS/Extra_edit_buttons but nothing seems to work.
Do you have a guide for beginners? :D

Thanks in advance

Removed from Signpost spamlist

[edit]

Hi! I'm Ral315, editor-in-chief of the Wikipedia Signpost. It appears that you have not edited in at least a few months. To avoid spamming your talk page any further, should you be on leave, your name has been removed from the Signpost spamlist. If you wish to continue receiving the Signpost on your talk page, please leave a note on my talk page to that effect, and I will restore your name, and keep you on the list indefinitely. Extra Edit Buttons

[edit]

Hello!

I'm working on a project in the medical field. I'm using mediawiki 1.13.4, windows xp sp2 and wamp2 in localhost.

I want to make editing as simple and I need to add more buttons in the toolbar. I read several pages about it, I tried to follow instructions, but without success. It seems wrong somewhere. Would you explain step by step how to add buttons in the toolbar?

I managed until now to install only CharInsert, but without drop down option.

I think I need all three options for my users (doctors, with so little free time) can easily edit.

Please, if you have time, send me an e-mail.

Thank You!

Regarding your "Extra edit buttons" script

[edit]

Hi, I'm just wondering, can your Extra edit buttons script be used on any other Wikis that are not part of the Wikimedia foundation? There are a few other Wikis I'm part of and I'd really like to use this script in a few others as well. Thanks! Xhaoz Talk Contribs 23:15, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding to this, how come it only works in user/user talk and not in article/article talk? I see you haven't edited since December 2008 but maybe you'll come back... - ALLSTRecho wuz here 12:00, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It should work in any wiki based that is using wikimedia as its base. Wikimedia has been updating its interface which is probably why it isn't working on some pages. If I get a chance I'll look at updating. --MarkS(talk) 17:12, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Basic State Pensions

[edit]

Hello Mark. With your extensive knowledge of pensions, can direct or provide to me, the value of pensions from 1968 to 2009 or at least to 1996-7. I have spent many hours on the internet from Canada without results. Thank you for your time.

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello MarkS! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

  1. Christopher Daykin - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

extra buttons toolbar

[edit]

Hi Mark,

I installed Mediawiki and I only have 8 buttons when I edit a page. to extend this toolbar and search for how to do this, I allways end up at you! But I can't get it to work. I use the vector skin, but none of the skins have a .js file. Do I need to create it myself (with your content) and where do I put it on the webserver?

I hope you can help me, thnx in advance.

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 19:48, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

[edit]

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

Extra edit buttons on Simple?

[edit]

Hi, would you have time to help with a problem? I'm feeling my way around trying to understand how to set up scripts, with which you are clearly an expert. Another editor in the Simple English wikipedia has a Scandinavian keyboard that lacks [] and {} characters. I set up a very crude script here, which is usable for someone with a strong sense of humour, but your Extra edit buttons is clearly much nicer. Would you be able to help bring that functionality over to Simple? Sminthopsis84 (talk) 15:10, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I've found that Edittools should offer this function, and is listed in the preferences at Simple wikipedia, but doesn't work. I'll see what I can do about chasing all the updates to Edittools in Bugzilla to see if any light will dawn about what the problem is and who might be able to fix it. Thanks. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 16:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
